San Jose, California, April 4, 2005 – How can professors in "messy old offices" network easily and economically? That was the question posed to Walter Dufresne in New York. His college needed robust tools that worked well with several disparate users. Ease of configuration and durability were also necessities.

Dufresne remembered that the Asante FR1004 router he'd purchased personally was "easy, pleasurable, and sensible" to use for the family's old and new PCs and Macs. So he recommended the Asante router to his colleagues and says they've been "so pleased" by its performance.

"Several members share offices," Dufresne said. "The Asante routers are useful for creating a little LAN in each office. We have a single Ethernet jack in the closet and share an Asante router. This has solved a poverty problem for us."

Robust and Ready to Go
Because people's habits differ, the college needed reliable networking equipment. For example, Dufresne's router was plugged into an electrical setup that was turned off every night, then turned on again in the morning. "We discovered that whether turned off or on, it didn't matter; the router didn't die," he commented.

On one occasion, an Ethernet card did crash the router. Dufresne got the diagnostic done through email and was impressed by Asante's technical support.

Future Networking Plans
Because Dufresne's department creates graphics presentation that need to be shuttled back and forth, he sees Gigabit Ethernet in their future as a more effective networking strategy. And although the college doesn't have a wireless network yet, that should come when security issues are addressed. Meanwhile, says Dufresne, "Asante's hardware more than meets the challenge on my local area network."
