Windows asks for 8 digit pin when trying to establish
a wireless connection to Asante router.
This document applies to setup of routers model 300N, 550N and 600N.
When setting up Windows operating system to work wirelessly with Asante router, Windows is asking for an 8 digit code and directs customer to look on the surface of the router. Asante routers do not provide this wireless authentication password on the surface for added security. User can access the router and setup this password easily by following the procedure below.
Make sure you are connected to the router as shown below. Once we setup the unit, you can unplug the LAN cable to use it wirelessly.
When you first try to connect to Asante router wirelessly, you will see the following configuration from the task bar of your Windows operating system:
(Note: depending on which router you have, the name could change to 550N or 300N).
If you try to connect to it, you will see the following request from Windows:
When you first get this prompt from Windows, select the option as shown below (Connect to the network without setting it up).
Load your browser. You should be prompted to login to your Asante's router.
All of the AWRT routers should show something similar to screenshot below (with some minor differences).
Please go ahead and enter a username for Administrator or you can leave it as admin and enter your choice of password twice. This is for you to be able to login to router and configure or manage it.
If the page does not come up, in the URL line type in: smarthub and press enter. This should load the configuration page as described above. If it still does not come up, make sure that your PC is connected via a wired connection to one of the four LAN ports on the router (Gray ports) and that the corresponding link light is on. You can also connect to the router by specifying the IP in the URL line of your browser (http://192.168.123.1).
1. Asante Smarthub is equipped with a hotspot feature mostly used in businesses such as coffee shops, restaurants and malls. This option will introduce a second authentication in addition to wireless security. Please note that this hotspot feature should not be confused with wireless authentication password. This option is to be able to assign a username and password for customers who come into the business location to connect to internet and then take away their access once they leave the area. When this option is enabled, after you enter your wireless password and load the browser, you will be prompted to login again with a username and password before connection to internet is allowed. To disable the hotspot feature, after login, click on Advance Setup click on Administration select the disabled option for EZ Setup and click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page.
If you are using any device such as a wireless DVR or Roku box, then the router’s hotspot feature needs to be programmed to work with these devices. If you disable the hotspot feature, then no configuration is required and the router will work with any device.
2. If you have completed the step above and have selected save settings, after about 30 seconds, you will be prompted to login to router again. Please login with same credentials. This time, click on wireless, click on Wireless Security at the top of the page.
You should see that for the first time setup, this option is set to "Disabled". From the pull down menu, select your choice of Authentication (WPA2-psk or Personal is the best for any user). Enter the Passphrase of your choice. This will be your wireless security code that you will use to connect any device to the router wirelessly. Leave everything else default. Click on Save Settings. This should complete the wireless configuration. Please note that the Passphrase that you just specified is the pin code that Windows was asking earlier.
After the above step has been completed, close your browser.
Using your Windows taskbar try to connect wirelessly to the router. At this point, you should be able to see the wireless network and when you try to connect to it, it should ask you to enter the wireless password. This password is the same as passphrase you entered above when configuring the router.
