Adding a Printer
The FriendlyNET FR3004LC Cable/DSL
Router can function as a network print server for Macintosh, Windows,
and UNIX/Linux computers.
This guide will show you how to connect your printer and
set up your computers.
1. Connecting your Printer
- Disconnect the printer from your computer
and switch it off.
- Connect the printer's parallel cable to the router as shown
below.
- Turn the printer on
- Reset the router by unplugging its power cable and re-plugging
it.
2. Sharing a
Printer with Mac OS
The following steps are required to create a desktop printer icon
and print using the FR3004LC Print Server function:
Requirements
The following requirements must be met before attempting
to utilize the FR3004LC Print Server function on the Macintosh platform
- Mac OS 7.6.x or Mac OS 8.1 or later
- LaserWriter driver v 8.5.1 or later
- Desktop Printer Spooler 2.1 extension or later
- Desktop Print Monitor 2.1 extension or later
- Desktop Printer Utility 1.0 or later
- Open Transport 1.1 or later
- PostScript Compatible Printer attached to the FR3004LC
Note: These drivers, extensions and utilities are installed
during a normal installation of the Macintosh Operating System.
If a Custom Installation was performed, you may need to go back
and Install other modules from your Macintosh CDs to obtain these
files.
Creating the Desktop Icon
- Locate the Desktop Printer Utility (usually located in
the Apple Extras folder on your hard disk)
- Select the Printer (LPR) and click OK.
- Change the Postscript Printer Description File (or PPD) to match
your printer. (This file should have come with your printer software.
If not, contact your manufacturer.)
- Select Change under Internet Printer and click
OK.
- Enter the LAN IP Address of the FR3004LC. (Default: 192.168.123.254)
Enter Ip (lower case LP) for the queue name.
- Click Verify to assure a connection is made then click
OK.
- Go to the File menu and select Save.
- Enter a name and location for the desktop printer icon and click
OK.
- Set your printing options by highlighting the Desktop Printer
icon and select Change Setup from the Printing Menu
- Repeat steps 1-9 for all Mac OS computers on your network.
3. Sharing a
Printer with Windows
To take advantage of the FriendlyNET FR3004LC's print server feature,
you must install the special driver on each computer that will be
using the printer server. This feature is supported on Microsoft
Windows 95/98/Me and Windows NT/2000 Professional.
(Windows 2000 and XP customers will need
to install the Windows NT print-server)
Installing printer drivers for Windows
- Insert the FriendlyNET CD-ROM disk in your CD-ROM drive. Run
the SETUP.EXE file from the CD-ROM. Please wait until the Welcome
dialog box appears, and click on the Next button.
- Select a destination folder or click Browse to choose another
location. Click Next.
- The setup program will begin installing all the programs into
the specified destination folder. When the setup program is completed,
click Finish.
- When prompted, choose the option to restart your computer and
click OK.
- Repeat steps 1-4 for all other windows devices on your network.
Configuring printer drivers for Windows 95/98/Me systems
The printer connected to the Printer port on the FR3004LC
router is referred to as a shared printer. On each computer sharing
the printer, open the Printers window in the My Computer menu. If
the printer has not been installed, click on the Add Printer icon
to choose the appropriate printer and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Go to the Start Menu, go to Control Panels, choose Printers
. Locate the icon of your shared printer, right click on it, and
choose Properties.
- Select the Details tab. Choose PRT: (FriendlyNET Print
Server) from the drop down list. Be sure that the printer
driver item is configured to the crrect driver for your shared
printer.
- Click on Port Settings. Enter the LAN IP address of the
router (Default 192.168.123.254), and click the OK button.
- Click OK again to exit the printer properties.
Configuring printer drivers for Windows NT/2000 systems
The configuration procedure for a Windows NT platform is
similar to that of Windows 95/98 except for the difference in layout
and terminology on the printer's Properties screen. When installing
the shared printer under Windows NT, you will see the option Ports
instead of Details (Windows 95/98), and Configure Port instead of
Port Settings (Windows 95/98).
- Go to the Start Menu, go to Control Panels, choose Printers
- Highlight the icon of the printer that is connected to the router
and click the right mouse button. You should see a menu with a
properties box in it. Left click on Properties to open the Printer
Properties dialog box.
- Click on the Sharing tab and select the Shared as option.
- Click on the Ports tab. Select the PRT Local Port option. You
should see the name of your printer next to this port.
- Click on the Configure Port... button.
- A printer address box will appear with the address 192.168.123.254
(factory default). If you have changed the router's IP address,
enter its new IP address. Click OK.
- Click the Apply button and then click OK to close the window.
