Configuring the Firewall - Distributed Servers

The FriendlyNET FR3000 series routers have a built-in firewall that is automatically activated when you connect your computers. It cannot be deactivated, but it features a high level of customization. If you are not familiar with TCP/IP, NAT, and UDP ports, you may wish to view the following FAQ items before you configure your firewall: "What is an IP Address?", "What is the difference between a hub, switch and router?", and "What is a firewall and how does it work?".

Accessing the Advanced Security menu:

  1. Start your web browser. Type http://192.168.123.254 Into your browser's address or location field and press Enter.
  2. In a few moments you'll see the Login screen for the router. Enter admin (the default password) and click Log in.
  3. Click the Advanced button from the top of the page.
  4. Scroll down until you see Advanced Security menu. It should look similar to this:

Advanced Security*
IP Address of DMZ host 192.168.100. Enable
IP Address for remote host administration Enable

*-This feature should only be used by users with an extensive knowledge of TCP/IP.

Configuring DMZ:

The DeMilitarized Zone (DMZ) lets you put one computer outside of the router's TCP/IP protection. Enabling this option will allow it to be unprotected from the router's NAT and UDP filtering Firewall. To enable, enter the IP address (last octet) of the computer you wish to place outside of the firewall, check the Enable box and press the Apply New Advanced Security Settings button.

Configuring IP Address for remote host adminstration

The FriendlyNET Cable/DSL Router can be administered from outside your LAN. Enter an IP address at which your router can be reached then check the Enable box and press the Apply New Advanced Security Settings button.
