Print server upgrade with Mac OS X 10.2

With Jaguar, Macintosh users are getting another helpful upgrade. The Asante FriendlyNET FR3004LC routers have always included a parallel port for LPT-based IP printing. With the advent of 10.2's advanced CUPS printing architecture, this parallel port now works for Mac users! And we don't mean just Postscript printers-- we also mean inkjets! The folks over at Linuxprinting.org have a website devoted to OS X
printing: http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3

It contains links to 2 small patches that will make the inkjets work: Gimp-print and Ghostscript. Both have OS X 10.2 installers for the Mac GUI experience. Installation and setup are not complicated. After these are installed, you can take that Epson, HP, or Lexmark printer, plug it in, set up the print center, and start printing.

On Asante routers, you cannot use the default queue; you use lower case "lp". That is the only change from default for the IP printing under OS X. This means that our wireless router, the FR1004AL, allows you to print from your couch! Owners of the previous Asante router models FR3002AL-1PCM and FR3004LC can also enjoy this feature.
