What is an IP Address?

To understand what our router does, you have to understand how IP Addresses work. An IP Address is a number at which a networked computer can be accessed. It's like a phone number or postal address. If someone wanted to contact you by telephone, they would have to know your telephone number or look it up. IP Addresses work exactly the same way.

When you type in "www.asante.com", your computer contacts a Domain Name Server, or DNS. (This a computer that usually belongs to your ISP whose address is stored in your networking control panel.) The DNS searches for the name "asante.com" in its database (much like you would look up a phone number in the phone book) and finds the IP Address at which the computer that has Asante's webpage can be found. Each computer on the Internet, including yours, has an IP address assigned to it.

An IP address is four numbers divided by periods, or dots. The default IP Address of the FriendlyNET Series Routers is 192.168.123.254. The last group of numbers will be of the most interest to you, because the IP Addresses of the computers connected to your router will all begin with the first three groups. The last will identify each computer uniquely.
