Before you start
Before you start, you should make sure you have the right equipment.
You need:
- A Cable or DSL modem with an RJ-45 (Ethernet) jack. (Or an RJ-45
Ethernet jack if you are using a T1 or other high speed internet
connection.)
- A computer with an RJ-45 Network Interface Card and Windows
95/98/2000/NT, Linux, or Mac OS installed on it. TCP/IP must be
installed properly.
- A web browser (at least 3.0; one can be found on the CD that
came with your router).
- At least two RJ-45 Cat 5 Ethernet cables (not RJ-45 Cat 5
Crossover Cables).
- A standard power outlet.
Problem: When I try to run winipcfg or
ipconfig, I get a "bad command or file name" error. (Windows
only)
Solution:
- Search your hard drive for winipcfg.exe or ipconfig.exe.
- Run Windows setup and install the program. (Refer to your Windows
manual for more details.)
Problem: I can't find my TCP/IP (Mac)
or Network (Windows) Control Panel
- Make sure your Network Interface Card (NIC) is properly installed.
Consult your NIC's manual for installation instrutions and more
details.
- Make sure the TCP/IP control panel is in the Control Panels
folder. (Mac only)
Problem: When I try to access the
router from my web browser, I get an error or nothing happens.
- Make sure you typed in the address correctly. (Default: 192.168.123.254)
- Add http:// in front of the address.
- Try http://192.168.123.254:88.
- Make sure the link light on the front panel is on for the port
you are plugged into. (If it is not, you have a bad cable, wrong
type of cable, have not seated the cable well, or have a problem
with your computer's ethernet adapter card.)
- Make sure the router is plugged in and on.
- Make sure your computer is set to DHCP (Mac) or Obtain IP
address automatically (PC) in the Network control panel.
- If there are any manual settings in your Network control panel,
make sure that any IP Addresses are set to 192.168.123.xxx (where
xxx can be any number other under 254).
- Check LEDs to make sure you have a functioning unit. See the
FAQ item "How do I read the lights
on the front of the router?"
- Reset the router by unplugging it, waiting 10 seconds, then
re-plugging it.
- Restart your computer.
Problem: I get to the login screen, but
it tells me my password is incorrect.
Problem: I don't see a "setup"
button.
- You have an older version of the firmware. You can either continue
Setting Up Your Router or upgrade the firmware.
- To continue setting up, click on TCP/IP settings and follow
the directions in the manual that came with your router. (Recommended)
- To upgrade your router's firmware, refer to the Advanced Features
item "Upgrading the Firmware"
Problem: I set my WAN type and restarted
the router, but I can't access any websites.
Problem: I can browse the Internet
fine, but Napster, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, etc., don't work.
- You need to configure your firewall to allow those programs
to operate. Refer to the Advanced Features item "Configuring
the Firewall"
