Hotspot feature on Asante Smarthub routers
Applies to Asante Smarthub 300N, 550N and 600N

Information provided below on Asante Smarthub Hotspot routers only applies to wireless workstations and devices. This setup does not apply to devices that are wired to the 4 ports switch on the back of the router and has no impact on wired Ethernet devices.

Asante Smarthub router is equipped with a hotspot feature mostly used in businesses such as coffee shops, restaurants and malls. This option will introduce a second authentication in addition to wireless security. This hotspot feature should not be confused with wireless authentication password. This option is to be able to assign a username and password for customers who come into the business location to connect to internet and then take away their access once they leave the area. When this option is enabled, after you enter your wireless password and load the browser, you will be prompted to login again with a username and password before connection to internet is allowed.

Before you continue, please make sure that the firmware of the router is up to date. To check the firmware of the router, connect to router via a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, click on Advance Setup and click on Status. Firmware version is the first line on Status page.

The following firmware versions are latest:

Asante Smarthub 300N: 1.0.12

Asante Smarthub 550N: 1.0.18

Asante Smarthub 600N: 1.0.12

Access router from a browser using default IP address:

If the firmware version is not up to date, please visit www.asante.com , and download the latest firmware from Support/Download site and use the information available to apply it first before you continue to next step.

If you are using any device such as wireless DVR or Roku box, game stations such as Wii, then the router’s hotspot feature needs to be programmed to work with these units or disabled. After you disable this feature, the router will work just like any other router. Please note that this is an enhancement compare to other brands of routers.

To disable the hotspot feature, after login to router’s management page, click on Advance Setup click on Administration select the disabled option for EZ Setup and click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page. After about 30 seconds, you will see a login prompt asking you to login to router again. You do not have to login, you should be able to connect to internet. This procedure is shown below.

To keep this hotspot feature and still be able to work with non computer devices such as mentioned above, you need to define the device in the hotspot device table of the router. To do this, login to router’s management page, click on Easy Setup, click on Add New User for Add a Non-Computer User.

Next, specify a Name and the Network MAC Address of your device. Name can be anything that you wish to use.

MAC address is the wireless MAC address of your device. Please note that Asante can not provide this information to you. Please refer to the manufacturer’s documents or contact their respective technical support if you are not sure how to obtain the wireless interface MAC address for your device. Attention needs to be given to obtain the wireless interface MAC address and not the Ethernet MAC address.

After specifying this information, click on Done. The screen below is just an example, the value for the MAC address is shown as an example also. Now you can use your device along with the hotspot feature of the Asante router. You can click on Save or Next to complete the setup.

How many users can be added to Asante Hotspot at the same time?
We have successfully tested up to 40 users with Asante Smarthub routers. This means that 40 users were added to the list of clients for hotspot and were able to login.

Can all the users that are added to the hotspot list use the same username and password?
